Today we’re launching Auto-Categorize — a new feature that automatically sorts every incoming transaction into your custom categories.
Not generic labels. Not a preset list you didn’t ask for. Your categories — the ones you built for your life.
The Problem With Auto-Categorization
Most budgeting apps already offer some version of this. They map merchant names to a fixed set of categories and call it a day. Starbucks goes to “Food & Drink.” Amazon goes to “Shopping.” Done.
Except it’s not done. That Starbucks was a client meeting. That Amazon order was a birthday gift. And the category you actually wanted — “Business Expenses” or “Gifts” — doesn’t exist in their system. So you either recategorize it yourself or settle for someone else’s idea of how your money should be organized.
That’s the tradeoff every other app asks you to make: convenience or control. Pick one.
We refused to ship Auto-Categorize until we didn’t have to make that tradeoff.
How It Works
Auto-Categorize is built on a bespoke AI system designed specifically for Treasury. It doesn’t just read merchant names — it understands the intent behind a transaction within the context of how you manage your money.
A charge at a gas station? It knows when that’s fuel versus a snack run. A Venmo payment to your roommate? It can tell the difference between rent and splitting dinner. A transfer to your savings account? It recognizes that as an internal move, not an expense.
The system learns from your categories and your history. “Date Nights,” “Side Hustle,” “Dog Stuff” — whatever system you’ve built, Auto-Categorize applies it automatically to every new transaction. On your custom categories, not generic ones — outperforming the top budgeting apps by a considerable margin.
Three Modes. Your Choice.
We built Auto-Categorize with the same philosophy behind everything in Treasury: you decide how it works.
All — Full autopilot. Every transaction is categorized the moment it lands. If you want a fully hands-off experience, this is it.
Confident Only — The system only applies a category when it’s highly confident in the match. High accuracy, highly convenient. A balanced default for most people.
None — Auto-Categorize stays off entirely. You categorize everything manually, just like before.
You can switch between modes at any time from Settings.
Your Money. Your Way. Now Even Faster.
Treasury has always been built around a simple idea: your financial life is yours to organize. Auto-Categorize doesn’t change that. It just means you spend less time sorting and more time seeing the full picture.
Auto-Categorize is available now for all Treasury members. Head to Settings > Auto-Categorize to choose your mode and get started.
