Subscription cost questions.
A 2022 C+R Research survey of 1,000 consumers found the average person actually spends about $219 a month on subscriptions, while estimating only $86 — a $133 monthly gap (C+R Research, crresearch.com). Your own number depends entirely on your services, so add up your actual charges above rather than relying on an average.
Pull the last two to three months of every bank and credit card statement and list anything that repeats on a monthly, quarterly, or annual cadence. Check app store subscriptions (Apple and Google) and digital wallets like PayPal too, since those bill through a processor and never show up as a named merchant on your card. See our subscription tracking guide for the full process — a connected money tool can keep the list current automatically instead of you re-auditing it every quarter.
Usually, when a service offers a discount for paying annually instead of monthly — the arithmetic is just the annual price divided by 12 compared against the monthly price. The trade-off is visibility: an annual charge hits once and then disappears from your attention for eleven months, which is exactly how forgotten subscriptions happen. If you pay annually, put the renewal date on a calendar so it is a decision next time, not a surprise.
