Using AI to manage your money — what works, what to trust, and what to avoid.

Match the task to the evidence and privacy needs

Start by deciding what help you need: explaining a concept, checking arithmetic or considering a consequential decision. The more an answer depends on your records or current rules, the more you need to check its evidence and the data you are sharing.

  1. Step 1

    Choose a bounded task

Use AI to explain terms or organize a question before asking it to decide for you. Check which facts it has and which it is assuming.

  2. Step 2

    Review the data before uploading

Use category totals or a synthetic example when possible. If details are necessary, check identifiers, retention, training controls and onward sharing first.

  3. Step 3

    Verify the answer

Recalculate totals and check dated primary sources. Ask which assumptions would change the conclusion, rather than treating confident wording as evidence.

  4. Step 4

    Decide where human review matters

Compare the limits of AI and human advice for decisions that involve taxes, legal rights or a complex personal situation.
