Choose the balance-sheet question first

Total net worth, liquid net worth and age benchmarks answer different questions. Calculate your own assets and debts first. Then narrow the asset definition for access to cash, or compare a clearly identified survey benchmark for context.

  1. Step 1

    Calculate total net worth

Use the calculator to list assets and liabilities. Include the home and its mortgage together rather than comparing an asset-only total with a debt-only figure.

  2. Step 2

    Check what is liquid

Use the editable balance sheet to compare total and liquid net worth under a stated definition. Liquid assets are not necessarily cash available to spend today.

  3. Step 3

    Read the age benchmark carefully

Compare median and average separately, and check the survey year and household unit. A national figure does not set your personal target.

  4. Step 4

    Explain changes over time

Use a consistent method and separate saving, debt repayment, market movements and changes in the assets you include.
