Follow the paycheck from earnings to usable cash

An offer quotes gross pay; your deposit reflects taxes and deductions. Check the earnings inputs and each subtraction before turning a new paycheck into a recurring budget. Treat bonuses separately from the income you can rely on each period.

  1. Step 1

    Estimate gross-to-net pay

Choose your state, filing status and pay frequency. Use the result as an estimate, then reconcile it with actual payroll deductions.

  2. Step 2

    Read the actual pay stub

Check hours, rates, current-period deductions and year-to-date totals. The annotated teaching example shows why a matching bank deposit is only one check.

  3. Step 3

    Understand bonus withholding

Compare withholding methods and distinguish money held back now from the final tax liability calculated on the return.

  4. Step 4

    Assign the reliable deposit

Put net pay beside the bills due before the following payday. Do not treat a bonus or first partial check as your normal income baseline.
